The Seychelles consist of 92 islands
located in the Indian Ocean 575 miles northeast of Madagascar
and 1000 miles due east of Mombasa, Kenya. The area of the
archipelago is about 171 square miles and the population is
62,000. Mahé is the primary island and is 17 miles long and 6
miles wide. Geologists say the Seychelles are formed
of pre-Cambrian granite more than 650 million years old, while
the outlying islands are fossilized coral.
When Africa and India broke apart,
the Seychelles were scattered over 600 square miles of the
western Indian Ocean. Relatively undisturbed for the past 600
million years, the Seychelles remain an isolated Eden teeming with unique wildlife. Like
Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands, the Seychelles are a
naturalist’s delight with numerous rare birds, abundant reef
fish, and colorful coral reefs. In addition, the Seychelles
are known for their giant tortoises. Although it is difficult
for American divers to travel to the Indian Ocean, European
divers have been exploring the lush reefs and abundant marine
life for years. Mahé is the primary island and is 17 miles
long and 6 miles wide.
