The Maldives consist of 1,100 coral
islands and tolls located in the Indian Ocean off the Southern
coast of India. The Maldives are built on the peaks of
ancient volcanoes and protected from the open ocean by barrier
reefs. Diving is such a priority in the Maldives that the
independent Republic of Maldives was founded expressly for
diving purposes. At least three-quarters of the world's reef
fish can be found in these waters, often just off the shore
from beachside resorts. The Maldives are also known for
abundant whale sharks. A famous wreck dive, the Maldive
Victory was a huge cargo ship whose prop at 100 feet is
a photographer's favorite. Drift diving is also popular along
the atoll express. Live-aboard boats are recommended to see
these beautiful remote islands.
